Problem Snapshot: Child obesity thrives
The nation’s top public health epidemic is starting with children.
In less than 15 years, nearly 1-in-2 Americans in many states will be obese – which does not include those who are overweight. For African-Americans it will be 3-in-4; and for Hispanics, it will be 2-in-3.
80% of youth who are overweight at
ages 10 to 15 will be obese at age 25.
25% of children ages 5-10 have high blood pressure,
high cholesterol or other warning signs of heart disease.
This is the first generation of children who are projected to live fewer years than their parents, largely due to obesity.
